Over time, more and more settlers began moving into North America in the search for new land. After the United States became an independent country, land expansion forced the Cherokee and Creek to give up more land to the new nation. In 1838, the Cherokee Removal to reservations began. The United States Army forced the Native Americans from their homes and made them march thousands of miles to a reservation in Oklahoma. More than 4,000 Native Americans died on this Journey and it became known as "The Trail of Tears."
